Nils spent a full year returning to the same quarter-mile stretch of forest before dawn, recording whatever was there. Understory sequences the results by season rather than by which recordings sound most “finished” — which means side B opens with eleven minutes of near-silence recorded during a February frost.
This is the closest thing to a pure field recording release we’ve put out. Nothing is processed beyond basic noise floor cleanup.
